Knowing Your Sound

You gotta know your sound to define your character

You gotta know your sound to define your character

Music is an expression of who you are. If you don’t exactly know who you are, then you wouldn’t be able to know your sound. Ask yourself, “Who are my influences? Who do I sound like? What is my style of music?” Getting these basics down will go a long way in defining your band or yourself as an artist.

Why do I have to know my sound? So potential fans who are unaware of your music can relate the music you make to an artist that they already like. I understand however that many artists do not want to get caught up in the “I sound like…” game. Nevertheless to gain ground on the popularity front, the artist and/or band must actively find ways to relate to their audience.

Take the time to discuss with your band or with yourself your music. What sound do you like, what to explore or what you don’t like. This face time with your music will ultimately improve the quality and consistency of your recordings and performance. Armed with a vision of what music you want to create is powerful and lends direction for creativity.
